CleverTap vs WebEngage: App or Web First? (2026)

CleverTap vs WebEngage for brands with an app, a website or both: which to pick, pricing, WhatsApp, and running a Shopify store on CleverTap.

CleverTap vs WebEngage: CleverTap for app-led businesses, WebEngage for website-led businesses

Updated October 2026.

CleverTap and WebEngage rarely compete head to head, because they're strongest at different things. CleverTap is built around apps. WebEngage is built around websites. So the real question is which side of your business earns more. If your app leads and your store is an extension, pick CleverTap. If your website leads and the app is new, pick WebEngage. Then test how well your choice handles the other side before you sign.

I've run CleverTap at Healthify and MyGate, both app businesses, and WebEngage at PNG Jewellers, a D2C brand selling on its website. I've also tried to run an app and a store on one platform, which is where this comparison really comes from.

CleverTap vs WebEngage at a glance

Item CleverTap WebEngage
Strongest at Apps: push, in-app messages, app funnels Websites: email, WhatsApp, campaign reporting
Pick it when Your app earns most of your revenue Your website earns most of your revenue
Web and Shopify Has a Shopify plugin, but our store events didn't fire reliably Built for it
Apps Built for it Offers in-app messaging and push
WhatsApp Paid add-on Automatic retries, which we used
Entry pricing Public plan, from $85 a month for up to 5,000 users Custom quote

CleverTap on a Shopify store: what happened when we tried

At Healthify, the app ran on CleverTap and served over 4 crore users. In 2024, we wanted HealthifyStore, our Shopify store, on the same CleverTap account. The aim was simple. Run campaigns for both from one place, and cross-sell store products to app users.

We installed CleverTap's Shopify plugin, but the store events didn't fire the way they should, and we couldn't get the vendor to prioritise fixing it. In the end, CleverTap did little more than web push notifications on the store's website.

So we stopped trying to force one platform to do both. The app stayed on CleverTap, and the store moved to Kwik Engage, a WhatsApp-first tool built for Shopify. We linked the two with UTM-tagged links. App users clicked through to the store, and we could still track where every sale came from. The store's repeat purchase work that followed is in the HealthifyStore case study.

One account for the app and the store failed because the Shopify events didn't fire; what worked was the app on CleverTap, the store on Kwik Engage, and UTM-tagged links between them

The lesson isn't that CleverTap can't handle a store. CleverTap now offers a no-code Shopify plugin that it says works on all plans. The lesson is to test the side you care less about with your real data, because "integration available" and "integration working" are different things.

CleverTap or WebEngage: pick by which side earns more

Your app leads, and the store is an extension: pick CleverTap. It's the strongest app platform I've used. At Healthify, every in-app surface had a clear funnel from impression to click to conversion, which you can see in the Healthify in-app funnels case study. At MyGate, it ran retention for an app that cross-sells many third-party services.

Your website leads, and the app is new: pick WebEngage. At PNG Jewellers, it retried failed WhatsApp messages automatically, email worked well, and its campaign table showed reach and revenue for every campaign. That reporting helped automations drive 77% of PNG Jewellers' CRM revenue. WebEngage also offers in-app messaging and app push for when your app grows.

Both matter equally: consider two platforms. One platform doing both badly costs more than two platforms each doing one job well. Our Healthify setup, app on CleverTap and store on a Shopify tool, connected by tracked links, is a practical way to run it.

Decision guide: if your app earns more, pick CleverTap; if your website earns more, pick WebEngage; if both matter equally, use one for each and link them

How to test the other side before you sign

Whichever you pick, ask the vendor to prove these on your own data, not in a demo account.

  1. Your events fire correctly on the side the platform is weaker at, such as Shopify purchases on CleverTap, or app events on WebEngage.
  2. One customer looks like one customer. Someone who uses your app and buys from your store should appear as one profile, not two.
  3. You can run one campaign across both, like an app push and a store WhatsApp message in the same journey.
  4. Reporting covers both. You should be able to see revenue from the app and the store without stitching reports together by hand.

If any of these fail during the trial, they'll fail after you sign too.

Four tests to run on your own data before signing: events fire on the weaker side, one customer is one profile, one campaign runs across app and store, and reporting covers both

WhatsApp on CleverTap vs WebEngage

If WhatsApp matters to you, this comparison tilts toward WebEngage. CleverTap lists WhatsApp as a paid add-on, and quoted us a monthly fee just to enable it. I've covered the numbers in CleverTap vs MoEngage. WebEngage handled WhatsApp as part of the platform for us, with automatic retries, which I've compared in MoEngage vs WebEngage. Retries matter because of how Meta limits marketing messages, which I've explained in why your WhatsApp messages aren't being delivered.

Which should you pick?

Pick CleverTap if your app is your main business and the store is secondary.

Pick WebEngage if your website is your main business and the app is new or small.

Pick both, one for each, if both matter equally and you can't get one platform to pass the tests above.

If you're earlier in the decision, start with the guide to choosing a CRM platform. If you're a Shopify brand just starting out, a WhatsApp-first tool may be all you need, as I explain in the four-platform comparison.

Where I fit

Running an app and a store together is where most platform setups go wrong. Compound Lab is a retention agency, and I've built exactly this kind of setup. If you're deciding how to run yours, book a 30-minute call and we'll work out which side should lead.

FAQ

Is CleverTap or WebEngage better? CleverTap is better for businesses where the app earns most of the revenue. WebEngage is better for businesses where the website does. If both matter equally, run one platform for each and connect them with tracked links.

Can CleverTap be used for a Shopify store? It offers a Shopify plugin. When we tried it in 2024, the store events didn't fire reliably. Test it with your own store data before committing.

Can WebEngage be used for a mobile app? Yes, it offers in-app messaging and push. For a business where the app is the main channel, CleverTap was the stronger platform in my experience.

Should I run my app and my store on one platform? Only if the platform passes a real test on both sides. If it doesn't, two platforms connected by tracked links can work better than one doing both badly.

Which is cheaper, CleverTap or WebEngage? CleverTap publishes an entry plan, from $85 a month for up to 5,000 monthly active users as of October 2026. WebEngage quotes custom pricing. For both, add-ons such as WhatsApp and advanced analytics can change the total, so compare all-in quotes. Whichever you pick has to earn back more than it costs, and the customer lifetime value calculator shows what one customer is worth to you.
