CleverTap vs MoEngage: Which Fits Your App? (2026)

CleverTap vs MoEngage from an operator who has run both: pricing, WhatsApp costs, analytics, push and support, and which one fits your app.

CleverTap vs MoEngage: CleverTap quoted a $900 monthly fee to switch on WhatsApp, while MoEngage bundled it into the contract

Updated October 2026.

CleverTap and MoEngage are both built for apps, and both do the core job well. The choice usually comes down to how central WhatsApp is to your retention. If push notifications and in-app messages carry most of the load, CleverTap is the stronger app platform. If WhatsApp matters, look hard at how each one prices it. CleverTap quoted us WhatsApp as a separate monthly fee. On MoEngage, it came bundled in our overall contract. Both now list WhatsApp as an add-on, so get it priced in writing either way.

I've run CleverTap at Healthify and MyGate, and MoEngage at Cumin Co and on Xiaomi's Mi app. Here's how they compare where it counts. If you're also weighing WebEngage or Kwik Engage, I've compared all four in CleverTap vs MoEngage vs WebEngage vs Kwik Engage.

WhatsApp pricing: the cost nobody puts in the demo

At Cumin Co, WhatsApp on MoEngage worked like a standard channel. We connected our BSP, paid its charges plus a small platform markup, and started sending. We never saw a separate WhatsApp line item, because it was part of our overall MoEngage contract.

On CleverTap, WhatsApp was a paid add-on. In 2023, CleverTap quoted us a $900 monthly platform fee to connect WhatsApp, whether through our own BSP or with CleverTap acting as the BSP. That was before a single message cost, and before the BSP's or Meta's per-message charges. At 2023 exchange rates, it came to over ₹70,000 a month, roughly what a junior CRM hire costs.

It's still a paid add-on today. CleverTap's own documentation lists WhatsApp Connect and WhatsApp Direct as add-ons, at 10% and 20% of the base plan on its entry plan, with WhatsApp Direct message credits bought separately. Ask for the figure on your plan before you sign. At Healthify, we sent WhatsApp through our own backend systems instead, which is one way around it if you have the engineering team.

MoEngage deserves a fair warning too. Its current listings show WhatsApp as a separately priced item. On its AWS Marketplace listing, for example, WhatsApp is billed per message and advanced analytics per tracked user, both on top of the Growth package. So the cost of WhatsApp may simply sit inside a bigger contract. Ask for it as its own line, so you can compare like for like.

Push notifications: CleverTap's scale, MoEngage's styling

This is where CleverTap earns its reputation. At Healthify, it ran retention for an app with over 4 crore users, and for an app-based business it's the strongest platform I've used. You can see the kind of work it carried in the Healthify in-app funnels case study. I also ran it at MyGate, where one app cross-sells many third-party services.

MoEngage had the edge on how push looked. On Xiaomi's Mi app, we sent push notifications in custom brand colours. At Healthify, we never got custom-styled push working on CleverTap, and nobody showed us how. For a brand where every notification competes for attention, that difference shows.

Two push notifications side by side: a default-styled notification, as we sent on CleverTap at Healthify, and one in custom brand colours, as we sent on MoEngage on the Mi app

CleverTap vs MoEngage analytics

At Healthify, analytics was CleverTap's real advantage. Every app event flowed straight into it, so we could see the full funnel for every in-app surface: impressions, clicks and conversion events, both unique and total. That told us which placements were earning their space and which weren't.

Funnel from in-app impression to click to conversion, counted as unique and total users, the view CleverTap made easy for every in-app surface at Healthify

Campaign analytics were good, but harder to slice and dice. Getting a detailed breakdown of a campaign took effort and know-how. It can be done, but for someone just starting out in app retention, it's difficult without an experienced person guiding them. In the CleverTap job listings I've seen, brands often ask for five to seven years of hands-on experience, so that person can guide a junior through execution. If you don't have that person yet, I've written about who should run retention and what each option costs.

At Cumin Co, we ran MoEngage on a website, so I used its analytics differently. Tracking the web funnel was easy: browse, collection, product page, add to cart, checkout and purchase. Its interface is also newer than CleverTap's. But a cleaner interface doesn't mean better analytics. Both platforms do broadly the same job, and what you can see depends on which events you send them. Once your events are integrated properly, the data flows on either.

Expect one more thing on both. Platform numbers won't match your internal dashboards exactly. Ours typically landed within 2 to 5% of what our internal tools showed. Decide upfront which source is the truth for reporting, so nobody argues over the gap.

CleverTap vs MoEngage pricing: what's included and what costs extra

Both vendors sell a base plan and charge for extras. Plans change, so treat this as a list of what to ask about, based on what each vendor publishes as of October 2026.

Feature CleverTap MoEngage
Public entry price Core plan, from $85 a month for up to 5,000 monthly active users Not on its own site. Its AWS Marketplace listing shows the Growth package at $750 a month for up to 25,000 monthly tracked users
Advanced analytics Add-on on the entry plan, 10% of the base plan Billed separately, by tracked users
WhatsApp through your own BSP Add-on (WhatsApp Connect), 10% of the base plan Billed per message on top of the plan
WhatsApp through the vendor Add-on (WhatsApp Direct), 20% of the base plan plus message credits Add-on (WhatsApp Native)
AI predictions and recommendations Top-tier Ultimate plan Add-on (AI-driven Predictions)
Free trial 30 days on the Core plan Not published

CleverTap's pricing page and startup plan page say most add-ons cost 10 to 20% of your base plan. MoEngage doesn't publish its add-on prices on its own site, so ask for every line item. If one feature matters most to you, like WhatsApp or advanced analytics, ask each vendor to quote it specifically.

Failed WhatsApp messages and retries

Meta holds back marketing messages when a customer has received too many from businesses that week, and recommends waiting at least 24 hours before retrying. MoEngage doesn't retry failed WhatsApp messages automatically, so every retry meant building a new segment of the failed users and sending again by hand. That's slow, and it muddies your delivery reporting.

A failed WhatsApp message on MoEngage: Meta holds it, you wait 24 hours, build a segment of failed users and resend by hand, against an automatic retry that runs on its own

I can't speak to CleverTap here, because we didn't send WhatsApp through it. If WhatsApp matters to you, ask either vendor to show you retries working before you sign. I've written about why this matters in why your WhatsApp messages aren't being delivered.

Support

Neither was strong for a mid-sized account, in different ways. On MoEngage, replies to support messages typically took about a day. On CleverTap, the problem was guidance. We had features we weren't using well, and our point of contact didn't push us to use them better.

If you're not a large account, ask both vendors who your contact will be, and how quickly they respond to accounts your size.

What about web and Shopify stores?

Both are app-first. If you also run a Shopify store, test the integration on your own data before committing. We tried to run HealthifyStore on CleverTap alongside the app and couldn't get the store events firing reliably. CleverTap now documents a Shopify plugin, so test it on your own store. I've covered what happened, and which tools suit a Shopify brand better, in the four-platform comparison.

Which should you pick?

Pick CleverTap if your app runs mostly on push and in-app messages, and you want the most capable app platform.

Pick MoEngage if WhatsApp is central to how you retain users, and its all-in quote, WhatsApp included, comes in lower than CleverTap's.

Which to pick: if WhatsApp is not central to your retention, CleverTap; if it is, compare all-in quotes with WhatsApp as its own line, and MoEngage when its quote is lower

Either way, neither is cheap for a small brand. If you're a young D2C brand rather than an app, start with the guide to choosing a CRM platform first.

FAQ

Who are CleverTap's main competitors? In India, MoEngage and WebEngage are the closest, with Netcore and Insider also in most shortlists. Globally, Braze is the main rival for large apps. For Shopify brands that mostly need WhatsApp, smaller tools like Kwik Engage compete too.

Does CleverTap charge extra for WhatsApp? Yes. In 2023 we were quoted a $900 monthly platform fee to enable WhatsApp, on top of BSP and Meta charges. Its current price list puts WhatsApp Connect at 10% and WhatsApp Direct at 20% of the base plan, so ask for the figure on your plan.

Which has better analytics, CleverTap or MoEngage? For apps, CleverTap's in-app funnel analytics were the strongest I've used. MoEngage made web funnels easy and has a newer interface. Both depend on how well your events are integrated, and both charge extra for advanced analytics.

Does MoEngage retry failed WhatsApp messages? No. Failed messages have to be re-sent manually by building a segment of the users they failed for.

Which is better for push notifications, CleverTap or MoEngage? MoEngage let us send custom-styled push in brand colours. CleverTap's push worked reliably at scale, but we never got custom styling working.
