CleverTap vs MoEngage vs WebEngage vs KwikEngage (2026)

CleverTap vs MoEngage vs WebEngage vs KwikEngage for Indian D2C brands and apps, from someone who has run all four: WhatsApp costs, retries and fit.

CleverTap, MoEngage, WebEngage and KwikEngage placed by business type, from app-first to Shopify D2C

Updated September 2026.

The right platform depends on what you are, not on which one is "best." For a consumer app, pick MoEngage if WhatsApp is central to your retention, or CleverTap if push and in-app messages carry most of the load. For a D2C brand that's just starting out, start on KwikEngage. When you outgrow it, move to WebEngage.

The short answer

Your business Pick Why
Consumer app, WhatsApp central MoEngage Strong app tooling, and no platform fee for WhatsApp in my experience
Consumer app, push and in-app led CleverTap The strongest app platform I've used, at two apps
D2C, just starting out KwikEngage WhatsApp-native, with retries, pop-ups and campaigns, from about ₹9,000 a month
D2C, outgrowing that WebEngage Analytics, email, journeys and WhatsApp retries in one place

What I've used, and for how long

I haven't run all four on the same business, so read each verdict with its context.

Platform Where I used it Type of business How long
CleverTap Healthify, an app with over 4 crore users, and MyGate App Over two years at Healthify, five months at MyGate
MoEngage A premium D2C brand, and briefly the Mi app at Xiaomi Web, and app push About a month at each
WebEngage PNG Jewellers, 2025 Web About four months
KwikEngage HealthifyStore in 2025, and a current client Web (Shopify) 2025 to now

The MoEngage verdict leans on cost and fit rather than a full test of what the platform can do, because a month is enough to see a bill, not every feature.

CleverTap vs MoEngage

Both are built for apps first, and both do it well. At Healthify, CleverTap handled a very large app audience reliably for more than two years, and its app analytics were the best I've worked with. I used it again for five months at MyGate. You can see the kind of work it carried in the Healthify in-app funnel case study and the MyGate cross-sell case study.

The difference that decides it for most Indian brands is WhatsApp. On MoEngage, WhatsApp was a standard channel: you connected your BSP and paid its charges. On CleverTap, WhatsApp was a paid add-on. In 2023 we were quoted a $900 monthly platform fee just to switch it on, before a single message was sent. At 2023 exchange rates, that's over ₹70,000 a month, roughly what a junior CRM hire costs.

We didn't pay it. Healthify sent WhatsApp through its own backend APIs instead, outside any engagement platform, which also gave us more room to customise each message than a platform template would have. That's an option if you have engineers to spare. Most D2C brands don't.

WhatsApp cost stack: CleverTap adds a $900 monthly platform fee above BSP and Meta charges, MoEngage adds none

It's still an add-on today. CleverTap's own documentation says its WhatsApp Direct add-on is billed at 20% of your base plan fee on the Essentials plan, with message credits bought separately. Ask for the figure on your plan before you sign.

Push is the other difference I noticed. At Xiaomi, we sent MoEngage push notifications in custom brand colours. At Healthify, we never got custom-coloured push working on CleverTap, and nobody showed us how.

Pick CleverTap if your app runs mostly on push and in-app messages. Pick MoEngage if WhatsApp is central to how you retain users.

MoEngage vs WebEngage

For a web-first D2C brand, this is the comparison that matters.

MoEngage did what we asked of it. Segments were accurate and WhatsApp campaigns ran as planned. The problem was fit. For a brand our size, the bill was several times what KwikEngage costs, for features we mostly didn't need. Dynamic product content was a paid extra, pop-ups weren't in our plan, and MoEngage doesn't offer automatic retries for failed WhatsApp messages. Our point of contact told us so directly, and asked us to build a separate segment of everyone who didn't receive a message and send it again. And as a mid-sized account, we waited about a day for replies to support messages.

None of that stopped the channel from working. On the same MoEngage setup, Cumin Co's WhatsApp delivery rate went from 23% to 44% in a month. It just took more manual work than it should have.

Two flows for a failed WhatsApp message: four manual steps to rebuild a segment and resend, against one automatic retry

WebEngage at PNG Jewellers was the smoother experience. Event data came through cleanly, email worked well, and support was helpful for onboarding, if not deep on retention strategy. The campaign performance table showed reach and revenue by campaign, with day-on-day revenue trends. That reporting is a big part of why automations drove 77% of PNG Jewellers' CRM revenue: we could see which flows earned and build more of them.

Its weak spot was capturing visitor details. The pop-up builder offered exit-intent, cart and URL-based triggers, but getting a clean, on-brand design was hard, which matters for a jewellery brand. WebEngage told us the feature was in beta, and offered to build our pop-ups if we sent them the HTML. The intent was good. But an ecommerce brand shouldn't be expected to have coders on hand to build a form. WebEngage has since rebuilt its on-site overlays with a drag-and-drop editor that needs no HTML, which fixes exactly this problem. I haven't used the new version, so test it before you rely on it.

Pick WebEngage for a growing D2C brand. Pick MoEngage when you're large enough to use what you pay for.

CleverTap vs WebEngage

These two rarely compete head to head, because they suit different businesses. CleverTap is built around apps. WebEngage is built for web and D2C.

We found this out the hard way. In 2024, we tried to run HealthifyStore, our Shopify store, on the same CleverTap account as the Healthify app, so we could cross-sell between the two from one place. We installed CleverTap's Shopify plugin, but the store events didn't fire reliably, and we couldn't get the vendor to prioritise fixing it. We connected the two with UTM-tagged links instead.

CleverTap now documents a no-code Shopify plugin that it says is available on all plans. If you're app-first with a store alongside, test it on your own setup before committing.

KwikEngage: where most D2C brands should start

For a D2C brand starting out, a full engagement platform is more tool than you need. KwikEngage, from GoKwik, is built around WhatsApp for Shopify stores. It includes automated retries for failed messages, identification of anonymous shoppers, pop-ups, and campaigns and automations.

I've used it since 2025, starting with HealthifyStore's repeat purchase work. Today I pay about ₹9,000 a month for WhatsApp with all the data, automations and campaigns a growing brand needs. An AI bot is available for about ₹10,000 a month more, and there's a support inbox where customer queries can be routed. I have no partner or referral arrangement with GoKwik. I'm a paying customer.

It isn't for everyone. A tool at this price still has to pay back, so run it against your own repeat revenue before you commit, not against its star rating.

What about BiteSpeed? It sits in the middle. In a 2026 demo, we were quoted about ₹30,000 a month, with AI features that go well beyond what a young brand needs. It didn't fit either stage for the brands I've worked with, but if you specifically need its AI features, BiteSpeed is worth a look.

What you only learn after signing

  • WhatsApp may cost extra. Meta charges per message, and your BSP adds its own charges. Ask whether enabling WhatsApp also carries a platform fee. A small markup on messages is normal. A monthly fee just to switch the channel on isn't.
  • "Integration available" doesn't mean it works for you. A plugin existing is different from your events firing correctly. Ask for a working test on your own store before you sign.
  • Check what your plan actually includes. Pop-ups, retries and dynamic product content are often add-ons. Get the list in writing.
  • Support depends on your account size. Ask who your point of contact will be, and how quickly they respond to an account your size.
  • Retries matter more than most brands realise. Failed WhatsApp messages you never retry are customers you never reach. I've written about this in why your WhatsApp messages aren't being delivered.

When to move up

Move off KwikEngage when your retention gets complex, not when you hit a customer count. Watch for these signs: several SKUs to cross-sell, a loyalty programme, three or more channels to coordinate, and enough traffic that identifying anonymous visitors is worth real effort. If that's you, you may also need someone to run it. I've covered that decision in who should run retention for your D2C brand.

FAQ

Which is better, CleverTap or MoEngage? For apps, both are strong. CleverTap has excellent app analytics, but WhatsApp is a paid add-on. MoEngage handled WhatsApp as a standard channel when I used it, though it doesn't retry failed messages automatically. Choose based on how central WhatsApp is to your retention.

Is WebEngage good for D2C brands? Yes, for brands that have outgrown a WhatsApp-first tool. Its analytics and email were strong at PNG Jewellers in 2025. It has since rebuilt its pop-up editor, so test the new version for lead capture.

Does CleverTap charge extra for WhatsApp? Yes. In 2023 we were quoted a $900 monthly platform fee to enable WhatsApp, on top of BSP charges. Its current documentation bills the WhatsApp add-on at 20% of the base plan fee on the Essentials plan, with message credits bought separately.

What is KwikEngage? A WhatsApp marketing app for Shopify stores, built by GoKwik. It covers campaigns, automations, retries for failed messages, pop-ups and anonymous shopper identification, with an AI bot as a paid extra.

What is the cheapest option for a small D2C brand in India? In my experience, KwikEngage. I pay about ₹9,000 a month for WhatsApp with automations and campaigns, as of 2026.

When should a D2C brand move from KwikEngage to WebEngage? When retention gets complex: several SKUs to cross-sell, a loyalty programme, three or more channels to coordinate, and enough traffic that identifying anonymous visitors is worth the effort.
