MoEngage Review and Pricing: Pros and Cons (2026)

An honest MoEngage review from an operator who ran it at Cumin Co and on Xiaomi's Mi app. What it does, pricing, pros, cons, free trial and alternatives.

MoEngage review: a capable platform, but on the base plan you get channels and analytics, not the AI features

Updated October 2026.

Best for: large consumer brands and apps that can afford MoEngage's higher plans, where its AI and push delivery tools live.

Not for: small and mid-sized D2C brands that can only stretch to the base plan.

Bottom line: MoEngage is a customer engagement platform for apps and websites, used to send push, in-app, email, SMS and WhatsApp messages and to run journeys. It's a capable platform, and its best features are real. But on the base plan, what we actually got was a way to send WhatsApp and email, and a place to pull analytics. If the base plan of a big tool is all you can afford, the top plan of a smaller tool will usually give you more.

I've run MoEngage at Cumin Co, a D2C brand selling on its website, and on Xiaomi's Mi app.

MoEngage features and plans

The table below is based on what MoEngage publishes, as of October 2026.

Analytics Funnels, retention and cohorts

Much of the AI on that list sits on Enterprise or is sold as an add-on. On our plan at Cumin Co, we didn't have access to it.

How we used MoEngage

At Cumin Co, my job was the bird's-eye view of retention, with a team running the platform day to day. MoEngage was where I pulled our weekly, fortnightly and monthly reports to see what was working and what wasn't.

Those reports did their job. Pulling them regularly is how I spotted our WhatsApp delivery sliding, a few points a month, before it became a crisis. I've written about how we found and fixed that in why your WhatsApp messages aren't being delivered, and the result, delivery going from 23% to 44%, is in the case study.

Beyond reporting, we used it to send WhatsApp messages and emails. That was the whole use case on our plan.

What worked

Segments we could trust. When we built a segment, the right people landed in it.

Reliable sending. WhatsApp and email campaigns went out as planned.

Reports good enough to act on. The numbers were clear enough to spot trends and make decisions from.

Branded push on apps. On the Mi app, we sent push notifications in custom brand colours, which I've compared in CleverTap vs MoEngage.

MoEngage drawbacks: what frustrated us

Events that stopped firing. Our website events had been set up and working, then add-to-cart events suddenly stopped reaching MoEngage, while product views still came through. Without add-to-cart data, our abandoned cart messages couldn't include the product the customer left behind. They went out as generic messages, sending people to a generic page. We escalated it to our MoEngage contact and chased it more than once. The lesson applies to any platform. Check your key events regularly, because a silent failure turns your best-performing messages into generic ones.

When add-to-cart events stop reaching MoEngage, abandoned cart messages lose the product the customer left behind and go out as generic messages to a generic page

Nothing proactive from the vendor. SMS was never set up as a channel, and our contact never suggested it. I was the one pushing for WhatsApp as the main channel with SMS as a fallback for messages that failed. Our quarterly business reviews were delayed, and brought little strategy when they happened.

AI we couldn't use. Sherpa, Merlin AI and the features that make MoEngage stand out were on plans we didn't have.

Other gaps, like no automatic WhatsApp retries and pop-ups not in our plan, are covered in MoEngage vs WebEngage.

MoEngage's base plan problem

This is the real lesson of this review, and it applies beyond MoEngage.

Big platforms sell their base plans to smaller brands, but the features in their marketing usually live on the higher plans. On a base tier, you get the channels and the reporting, and at a base-tier account size, you get limited attention from the vendor's team.

What the MoEngage base plan gave us, WhatsApp, email and reporting, against what sat on higher plans or add-ons, including Sherpa, Merlin AI and Push Amplification Plus

So compare honestly. Line up the base plan of the big platform against the top plan of a smaller tool at the same price. For a brand our size, the smaller tool's top plan usually wins, because you actually get to use everything you're paying for. For a Shopify brand, that smaller tool is often a WhatsApp-first one, which I've covered in my Kwik Engage review.

MoEngage pricing

MoEngage doesn't publish prices on its own site. Plans are quoted based on your audience size and the features you choose. Its plans and pricing page lists WhatsApp Native and AI-driven predictions as add-ons. Its AWS Marketplace listing shows the Growth package at $750 a month for up to 25,000 monthly tracked users, with WhatsApp and advanced analytics billed on top. Get every item in writing, and check the total against what a customer is worth to you with the customer lifetime value calculator.

Questions to ask MoEngage before you sign

  1. Which AI features are in our plan, by name? Sherpa, Merlin AI, Best Time to Send and Push Amplification Plus may not be.
  2. What will you do proactively at our account size? Ask how often you'll get a review and what recommendations to expect.
  3. How will we know if events stop firing? Ask about alerts and event health checks.
  4. Can you set up SMS as a fallback for failed WhatsApp messages? Ask them to show it working.
  5. Are WhatsApp, advanced analytics and dynamic product content included, or extra?

MoEngage alternatives

For apps, MoEngage's closest rival is CleverTap, which I compare in CleverTap vs MoEngage and review on its own in my CleverTap review. Where I fit

What we missed most on MoEngage was someone thinking ahead. Nobody suggested the SMS fallback, caught the broken events, or turned quarterly reviews into a plan. Compound Lab is a retention agency, and that's the job. I've compared that with hiring in-house in who should run retention. FAQ

Who founded MoEngage? Raviteja Dodda, its CEO, and Yashwanth Kumar founded MoEngage in 2014. The company started in Bengaluru and is now headquartered in San Francisco.

Is MoEngage a CDP? Not mainly. MoEngage keeps a profile for every user and can take in data from other tools, but it's built to send messages, which makes it a customer engagement platform. A CDP's main job is to join data from every source for other tools to use. My guide to customer data platforms covers the difference.

What is MoEngage? MoEngage is a customer engagement platform for consumer apps and websites. Brands use it to segment customers, send push, in-app, email, SMS and WhatsApp messages, run automated journeys and analyse retention.

Is MoEngage a CRM? Not in the sales sense. It doesn't manage leads and deals the way a sales CRM does. It's a customer engagement platform, which is what D2C and app teams usually mean by "CRM": the tool that segments customers and messages them across channels. For how it compares with other options, see the guide to choosing a CRM platform.

Is MoEngage an Indian company? MoEngage was founded in 2014 by Raviteja Dodda and Yashwanth Kumar. Its about page lists offices in Bengaluru and New Delhi alongside San Francisco, New York, London and other cities.

Is MoEngage good? It's a capable platform, especially on higher plans with its AI and push delivery tools. On the base plan, you mainly get channels and reporting.

How much does MoEngage cost? MoEngage doesn't publish prices on its own site. Plans are quoted on audience size and features. Its AWS Marketplace listing shows the Growth package at $750 a month for up to 25,000 monthly tracked users, with WhatsApp and advanced analytics billed on top.

What are MoEngage's pros and cons? Pros are accurate segments, reliable sending, usable reports, and strong AI and push tools on higher plans. Cons are AI features on higher plans or add-ons, little proactive help on smaller accounts, and no automatic WhatsApp retries.

Is MoEngage good for small D2C brands? Usually not. If you can only afford the base plan, the top plan of a smaller tool often gives you more for the same money.

Does MoEngage have a free trial? MoEngage has no published free trial as of October 2026. Its pricing page offers a demo on request, and plans are quoted for your audience size.

What is MoEngage Push Amplification? Push Amplification Plus is a MoEngage feature that lifts push notification delivery on Android phones. It is enabled through a support ticket, so ask whether your plan includes it.

Does MoEngage support SMS? Yes, SMS is one of its channels. At Cumin Co it was never set up for us, so if you want SMS as a fallback for failed WhatsApp messages, ask the vendor to show it working before you sign.

Does MoEngage have AI features? Yes, including Sherpa for campaign optimisation, Best Time to Send, and Merlin AI for segments, copy and images. Check which are included in your plan.

Is MoEngage better than CleverTap? For apps that run mostly on push and in-app messages, CleverTap has the edge. Where WhatsApp drives retention, MoEngage was simpler for us. Compare all-in quotes, since both now list WhatsApp as an add-on. The full comparison is in CleverTap vs MoEngage.

What are the best MoEngage alternatives? For apps, CleverTap is the closest alternative. For website-first D2C brands, WebEngage. For a Shopify brand on a smaller budget, a WhatsApp-first tool like Kwik Engage.
