CRM for Shopify and D2C Brands: How to Choose (2026)
How to choose a CRM for a Shopify store or D2C brand in India: three questions to narrow the field, what a Shopify CRM must do and five checks before you sign.

Updated October 2026.
Most founders pick a CRM platform from a demo. The better way is to answer three questions about your own business first, because they decide the shortlist before any sales call does. Are you an app or a website? How central is WhatsApp to your retention? And how complex is your retention today?
I've run CleverTap at Healthify and MyGate, MoEngage at Cumin Co and on Xiaomi's Mi app, WebEngage at PNG Jewellers, and Kwik Engage at HealthifyStore and a current client. This is the framework I use when a founder asks me which CRM platform to buy. For what the platform does once it's running, see my guide to CRM marketing.
Question 1: Are you an app or a website?
This is the biggest filter, and most comparison pages skip it.
CleverTap and MoEngage were built around apps: push notifications, in-app messages, app analytics. WebEngage and Kwik Engage fit web and Shopify brands better. A platform built for the other kind of business can still work, but you'll spend money and effort bending it.
If you run both, an app and a store, decide which one drives most of your revenue, and test the platform on the other one before you sign. We learned this at Healthify, where the Shopify store's events never fired reliably on the app's CleverTap account. I've written up what happened in the four-platform comparison.
Question 2: How central is WhatsApp?
For most Indian D2C brands, WhatsApp is the highest-converting retention channel. So check three things before you sign.
- How is WhatsApp priced? On many platforms it's an add-on, and on some it's bundled into a bigger contract where you never see it. Ask for it as its own line: platform fee, BSP charges, any markup on messages, and Meta's own per-message rates, added up per month. That's the only way to compare platforms like for like. CleverTap, for example, once quoted us $900 a month just to switch WhatsApp on.
- Does it retry failed messages automatically? Meta withholds some marketing messages when a customer has had too many, and its guidance is to wait 24 hours before retrying. A platform that does this for you saves hours of rebuilding segments by hand.
- Can customers reply on the same number? Two-way conversation on your marketing number is one of the strongest signals for delivery. I've covered why in why your WhatsApp messages aren't being delivered.

Question 3: How complex is your retention?
Don't buy for the brand you hope to be in three years. Buy for the retention you're running now, plus the next twelve months.
You've outgrown a simple WhatsApp-first tool when most of these are true: you sell several SKUs that need cross-selling, you run a loyalty programme, you coordinate three or more channels, and you have enough traffic that identifying anonymous visitors is worth real effort.

Which CRM platform fits your D2C brand
| If you are | Start with | Then compare |
|---|---|---|
| An app, with WhatsApp central to retention | CleverTap or MoEngage, compared on all-in WhatsApp quotes | CleverTap vs MoEngage |
| An app, led by push and in-app messages | CleverTap | CleverTap vs MoEngage |
| A D2C brand just starting out | Kwik Engage | Kwik Engage vs WebEngage |
| A D2C brand with complex retention | WebEngage | MoEngage vs WebEngage |
Each comparison goes deeper on the trade-offs between two platforms. This page is about narrowing the field.

CRM for Shopify: what it needs to do
Most Indian D2C brands sell on Shopify, so the CRM's Shopify connection matters more than its feature list. A CRM for Shopify should do four things without custom code.
- Pull every order and customer from Shopify, including COD orders and the order's status after delivery or return.
- Fire browse, cart and checkout events from the storefront, so cart and browse reminders reach the right people. If you use a one-click checkout, check that its events come through too, since they often skip Shopify's own checkout.
- Keep phone numbers and WhatsApp consent clean, so a customer who opts in at checkout can be messaged on WhatsApp.
- Send orders back as revenue, so every campaign and journey shows what it earned.
Kwik Engage installs from the Shopify App Store and it's what I used at HealthifyStore. WebEngage, MoEngage and CleverTap all offer Shopify integrations as well. Klaviyo is popular with Shopify brands abroad and leads with email, which is a smaller channel than WhatsApp for most Indian brands. Whichever you pick, test it on your own store, because at Healthify the Shopify store's events never fired reliably into the app's CleverTap account.
Five things to check before you sign a CRM contract
These are the things I've only learned after a contract was signed.
- Get your plan's feature list in writing. Pop-ups, WhatsApp retries and dynamic product content are often add-ons. A feature in the demo isn't necessarily a feature in your plan.
- Ask for a working test on your own store. "Integration available" doesn't mean your events will fire. CleverTap, for example, offers a Shopify plugin, but test any integration with your real data before committing.
- Ask which analytics come with your plan. Advanced analytics, like journey and path analysis, is an add-on on several platforms. And expect the platform's numbers to differ from your internal dashboards by a few percent, so decide upfront which one is your source of truth.
- Ask who your point of contact is, and how fast they reply to accounts your size. Support at a large client and support at a mid-sized one are often different products.
- Ask how hard it is to leave. Can you export your events, segments and templates cleanly if you switch?
Before any of this, know what one customer is worth to you, so you know what a platform has to earn back each month. The customer lifetime value calculator works it out from four numbers in your Shopify reports.

Who sets it up matters as much as which you pick
The best platform does little if nobody configures the journeys behind it. Platform onboarding teams usually set up template flows that look the same across your category. The journeys that earn are built around your own customers, like the win-back campaign that lifted Healthify's revenue 79%. If you're deciding whether to hire someone, use an agency or bring in a specialist, I've broken that down in who should run retention for your D2C brand.

FAQ
Does Shopify have a CRM tool? Partly. Shopify keeps a customer list with order history, lets you build customer segments and send emails through Shopify Email, and automate simple tasks with Shopify Flow. It doesn't run WhatsApp journeys or behaviour-based messages across channels, or give deep cohort analysis, which is why most growing brands add a CRM app on top.
What is the best CRM for Shopify in India? For a young Shopify brand, a WhatsApp-first tool from the Shopify App Store, such as Kwik Engage, is usually enough. Once you need journeys across WhatsApp, email, SMS and on-site messages with deeper analytics, WebEngage, MoEngage or CleverTap fit better. Test the Shopify integration on your own store before you sign.
What is the best CRM platform for a D2C brand in India? It depends on whether you're an app or a website, how much you rely on WhatsApp, and how complex your retention is. For a young Shopify brand, a WhatsApp-first tool like Kwik Engage is usually enough. Larger brands with complex retention need a full engagement platform such as WebEngage, MoEngage or CleverTap.
Which CRM platforms do Indian D2C brands use? The ones I've run are CleverTap and MoEngage, which are built for apps, WebEngage, which suits web and D2C brands, and Kwik Engage, a WhatsApp-first tool for Shopify stores. I compare all four in CleverTap vs MoEngage vs WebEngage vs Kwik Engage.
What's the difference between a CRM platform and a BSP? A BSP (business solution provider) sends your WhatsApp messages through Meta's API. A CRM or engagement platform decides who gets which message and when, across WhatsApp, email, SMS and push. Many platforms connect to a separate BSP, while some tools do both.
When should I switch platforms? When your retention outgrows what the tool can do, such as cross-selling across several SKUs, running loyalty, or coordinating three or more channels. Not when a sales team tells you it's time.
How much should a D2C brand spend on a CRM platform? Enough that the revenue your journeys earn clearly covers it. A small brand can run WhatsApp, automations and campaigns on a WhatsApp-first tool for under ₹15,000 a month. Full engagement platforms are usually quoted custom.
